New Hampshire Auto Insurance Coverage

New Hampshire was one of the first states to declare its independence from England. But before you begin to explore the rich American history found within the Granite State, it's important to understand the auto insurance requirements in New Hampshire.

Required Auto Insurance in New Hampshire

New Hampshire requires all drivers to be able to meet their financial responsibilities in the event of an accident. While the state has no mandatory insurance law, New Hampshire does recommend that all drivers have the following minimum liability coverage:

  • Bodily Injury: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.
  • Property Damage: $25,000 per accident.
  • Uninsured Motorist Coverage: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.
  • Medical Payments Coverage: $1,000 per accident.

New Hampshire Teen Driving Laws

Unlike other states, New Hampshire does not have learner's permits. Instead, teens obtain their Youth Operator License after completing their supervised driving requirements, finishing a driver's education program, and passing several tests.

  • Supervised Driving: At 15 and a half, New Hampshire teens can begin practicing driving under adult supervision. In order to obtain their Youth Operator License, teens must log 40 hours of behind-the-wheel experience, with 10 hours being at night.
  • Driver's Education: Teens must enroll and complete a state-approved driver's education course before obtaining their Youth Operator License. Additionally, teens must also pass a vision screening, knowledge test, and a road skills test.
  • Youth Operator License: After completing the above requirements, teens may obtain their Youth Operator License. With this license, teens are prohibited from driving between 1:00 AM and 4:00 AM for the first six months. The license will expire once the driver turns 21.

Please be aware of additional restrictions for teen drivers in New Hampshire.
