Hawaii requires all drivers to have liability insurance for both property damage and bodily injury, which pays for any damage or injuries caused by an accident in which you were at fault. Hawaii requires the following minimum liability coverage:

  • Bodily Injury: $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident.

  • Personal Injury Protection: $10,000 per person.

Hawaii Teen Driving Laws

Hawaii operates under a Graduated Driver's License (GDL) program, which includes three stages: Instructional Permit, Provisional License, and Full Driver's License.

  • Instructional Permit: Once your teen is 15 and 6 months old, they may apply for their instructional permit. To obtain their permit, teen drivers must pass a written exam and a vision screening. An instructional permit allows teens to practice driving with a licensed driver at least 21 years of age.
  • Provisional License: At 16, teen drivers can apply for a provisional license after holding an instruction permit for 180 days, completing a driver's education course, and passing a road examination. Teen drivers cannot drive between the hours of 11:00 PM and 5:00 AM and may not carry more than one passenger under the age of 18, except siblings.
  • Full Driver's License: At 17, drivers may apply for a full driver's license after holding their provisional license for at least 6 months.

Please be aware of additional driving restrictions for teen drivers in Hawaii.
